Nyami Nyami Sounds hail from Northern Zimbabwe. Formed in the 1980s, the Kariba band began as a youth band. Under the name "Angoni Family" they played
local and reggae cover songs. The band eventually progressed to playing their own music. Lead by their late lead singer Richard Mapfuvanhandu, they renamed themselves Nyami Nyami Sounds and achieved considerable domestic success. Melding local influences of Northern Zimbabwe into their music, the band had hits such as Fundo Inokosha, Perekedza Muchato, and Bhora Rangu.
Nyami Nyami is the name of the Shona river god. It is also the name of a two-man, durable plastic kayak designed to withstand some of the roughest whitewater rapids in the world, including those leading up to Zimbabwe's Victoria Falls.
